  3. I would like to leave a message of thanks to a wonderful, and irreplaceable paediatric diabetes nurse, Niamh O’Rourke.

When my daughter was first diagnosed, Niamhs voice was the only one that made sense to me. The reassurance and support from day one is something that still makes me emotional.

Niamh has managed to educate and support myself and my family, in ways I never thought possible. She ensured that at no point, would my daughters life would have to change for Diabetes. She assured us that diabetes will have to fit into her life.

Her honesty and integrity, her strength to fight and be the voice of so many children, is something many could not match if they tried. And she does it all, not for a thank you, just to know we are taking steps and leaps forward in our children’s diabetes management.

Niamh is, an amazingly beautiful person inside and out. Her care and tenderness is infectious. Her dedication and ability to push for change, is inspiring. Her passion is something to be in awe of.

So, thank you Niamh, from the bottom of my heart. You have changed the lives of my family members for the better, I know you have done so for many other people. You have advocated for our children in amazing ways. We can never repay you, but we are here, full of appreciation and understanding that without you, our children wouldn’t be the children they are today.

  4. It takes a very special nurse to make a 2 year old happy about a hospital appointment and Niamh O’Rourke of Mullingar Paediatric Diabetic Clinic is that person, and more wonderful than I can put into words! My daughter LOVES going to see her and our 4 year old always wants to come too…to see Niamh!
She genuinely and wholeheartedly loves and cares for my daughter, we feel so safe in her care.
She goes above and beyond the call of duty, we are just so lucky to have her in our lives.
From the moment we met her she made us feel safe and calm, she has a beautiful smile and a contagious positive attitude to such a life altering event, she empowers Mammy and Daddy and makes our 2yr old feel like a Superhero! She means the world to us!

  9. On a dark wet January night, there was a knock at ma’s front door. It was Mary. Armed with a smile, a hug and a large overnight bag, she was settling in for the night.

But Ma and Mary had never met before.

You see, Mary was a night nurse with the Irish Cancer Society. She was there to provide end of life care for our lovely ma and to make sure she was comfortable throughout the night.

We never knew this type of support existed. A highly skilled nurse with the equipment to administer instant pain relief and she stays overnight?!

It’s impossible to put into words the difference Mary made, not just to ma but to me and my sister too. Mary put ma at ease, from responding to her every need to reassuring her she’d be honoured to stay with her another night.

Ma never met Mary again. She was moved to Our Lady’s Hospice in Harold’s Cross the following day and spent her final days under the care of the amazing team there. But she was so thankful to Mary and the difference she made.

You never know when you or your loved ones will need a Mary…

  11. I cannot thank the nurses at Cappagh Hospital enough for the incredible care my Dad received while he was going through a knee operation. It was at Christmas time a number of years ago, and all of the nurses on his ward made myself and my brothers (who were a lot younger at the time) feel a lot more at ease and comfortable. They really made the whole process easier to deal with and I’ll never forget their compassion towards both my dad and us. He still talks about you all to this day and how you looked after him so well outside of visiting hours when he had no family at his bedside. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for the dedication and hard work you all put in each and every day!
