Ireland’s Nurses Have Carried the Country — Now It’s Time to Say Thank You

Every Irish family has a story about a nurse.

The calm voice in an emergency department at 3am.
The oncology nurse who explained difficult news with kindness.
The public health nurse who reassured a frightened parent.
The ICU nurse who stayed behind after a shift because a patient needed someone beside them.

Ahead of International Nurses Day on May 12, the national #CelebrateNurses campaign is once again inviting the public to recognise the extraordinary contribution nurses make across Ireland every single day.

Led by 3Q Recruitment and Nurse Jobs Ireland since 2011, the campaign aims to transform International Nurses Day into a true national day of thanks for working nurses.

This year’s global theme — empowerment — comes at a critical time for healthcare staff in Ireland.

Nurses continue to face mounting pressures: overcrowded hospitals, staffing shortages, increasing patient complexity, and the emotional toll that comes with caring for people during the most vulnerable moments of their lives. Yet despite these challenges, nursing remains one of the most trusted and compassionate professions in our society.

The #CelebrateNurses campaign is asking people across the country to take one small but meaningful action: leave a message, memory, or story of thanks for a nurse who made a difference.

Messages can be shared at CelebrateNurses.ie or by commenting under the campaign’s pinned social media posts using #CelebrateNurses.

To encourage participation, the campaign will also hold a raffle:

  • One commenter will receive a €100 gift voucher
  • One nurse mentioned in a story will receive a €200 gift voucher

But organisers say the real reward is recognition.

“Nurses are often there for people during the defining moments of their lives — births, illness, recovery, grief, and hope,” campaign organisers said. “A simple thank-you can mean more than people realise.”

At a time when conversations around healthcare often focus on waiting lists and system pressures, #CelebrateNurses offers an opportunity to focus on the people holding the system together.

And perhaps this year, more than ever, nurses deserve to hear it: Ireland sees you, and Ireland thanks you.
